Beyond Extraction: Developing around Critical Minerals in the Global South

November 2024

Private, in-person roundtable - 2 hrs

Background

Swaniti Global, with India Climate Collaborative (ICC) and as part of the Council for Critical Minerals Development in Global South, hosted a private breakfast alongside COP29 centering on critical mineral development in Global South countries and opportunities for cooperation on development of—and fair and equitable access to—mineral value chains.

On the eve of the COP29 discussions on Energy/Peace, Relief and Recovery, this roundtable brought together leading policymakers and experts from key Global South economies—including Brazil, India, and South Africa—to discuss (1) Leveraging critical mineral wealth to develop local value chains; (2) Cooperation between the Global South countries to develop value chains; and (3) Community benefit mechanisms and ESG standards in mining.
