This invite-only roundtable delved into key findings of a study conducted by the India ZEV Research Centre, Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis, which outlines a structured approach for India to develop a resilient lithium supply chain, through a combination of domestic policy strategies and strategic international cooperation, including asset acquisition, demand contracts, critical mineral agreements, and the role of recycling and material recovery.

The Council hosted two panels at, and in collaboration with, Mining Indaba for its 2025 conference in Cape Town. These sessions focused on (a) the role of African governments in critical mineral value chain development; and (b) how to increase investment in the midstream and downstream of critical minerals across Africa. These sessions were primarily intended to (a) socialize the Council among African stakeholders by participating in a key critical minerals conference on the continent

Swaniti Global, with India Climate Collaborative (ICC) and as part of the Council for Critical Minerals Development in Global South, hosted a private breakfast alongside COP29 centering on critical mineral development in Global South countries and opportunities for cooperation on development of—and fair and equitable access to—mineral value chains.

Demand for minerals that are essential to new energy technologies are expected to at least double by 2030 according to the International Energy Agency’s 2024 projections. With many of these resources located in the Global South, this event delved into critical questions around equitable mineral access, investment opportunities, and advancing higher-value supply chains within the region.

The roundtable took place alongside the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 2024, convened by the Council on Critical Minerals Development in the Global South facilitated by Sustainable Energy for All, the Institute for Transportation Studies (UC Davis) and Swaniti Global, in partnership with the Africa Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Co-hosted by the Council on Critical Minerals Development in the Global South and KADIN Net Zero Hub, this event was held on the sidelines of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2024 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Development of critical minerals, both for and beyond energy transition, must include local value chain creation, economic development, employment generation and principles of resource-sharing with the local communities. Global South economies have voiced this aspiration, determined to not replicate the historic “resource curse.”
